Cool Summer Job: Join the DBA’s Core Crew!

The Downtown Business Association (DBA) is hiring five mature, outgoing, post-secondary students to act as Downtown Ambassadors in our Core Crew Program. In their bright red jackets and caps, Core Crew members are a friendly, recognizable presence on Downtown streets.

Crew members act as tour guides for the DBA’s daily walking tours, represent the association at summer festivals and Downtown event, and play an important role in Downtown tourism. In addition, they provide helpful information to the public and help keep Downtown clean.

 

Duties:
  • Downtown Ambassador: Initiate contact with and engage the public, providing useful information to both Downtown visitors and local residents.
  • Lead visitors on daily, 90-minute guided walking tours of Downtown.
  • Represent the DBA and assist at festivals and special events throughout the summer.
  • Report unsafe conditions, graffiti, and cleaning issues in Downtown.
  • Help keep Downtown clean and welcoming via the Capital City Clean-up Program.
 
Skills Required:
  • Core Crew members embrace their role as Downtown Ambassadors. Maturity, confidence, and an outgoing personality are essential! Successful candidates are excited about greeting and engaging with tourists, businesses, and the general public.
  • Physically fit – crew members should enjoy walking long distances daily.
  • Because they work outside most days – rain or shine – Core Crew members should enjoy being outdoors.
  • Willingness to step outside of your comfort zone to engage with and assist the public.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Self-motivated: Able to work effectively, multi-task, and meet daily goals with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of Downtown and the City of Edmonton is helpful.
  • Training and/or experience in public speaking, tourism, hospitality, broadcasting, or communications are assets, as are leadership skills and management training.
  • Must be registered as a full-time post-secondary student in both the previous and upcoming school year.

 

Job Environment:
  • Weekdays 9:30 to 4:30 (six paid hours daily, with a one hour, unpaid lunch break). Occasional evening and weekend shifts are required during festival season.
  • Salary: $18 per hour
  • Most work days are spent outdoors – rain or shine.
  • Training and uniforms are provided.

End Date:              Friday, August 24, 2018

  • Host the DBA’s FREE, guided walking tours
  • Provide helpful information to tourists and locals including transit info, directions, and information about festivals, shopping, and Downtown events.
  • Represent the DBA at Downtown summer festivals and special events
  • Help keep Downtown clean by taking part in Capital City Clean Up

Core Crew Details

Location:
  • Michael Phair Park (next to “Evoolution” on 104 Street just north of Jasper Avenue)
  • Please arrive 10 minutes early.
Reservations:
  • *NEW* Individual reservations will be required for 2018 tours. Tour capacity is capped at 20. Book early to ensure a spot.
  • Tours are always free and there is no charge to pre-book.
  • Check back in May for full details and availability.
Private Tours:
  • Do you have a group of 12 to 20 people, and need to have the tour at a different time? Separate tours may be scheduled to accommodate large or corporate groups (depending on the Crew’s limited availability). 
  • Please note we cannot book private tours for fewer than 12 confirmed participants. You must have between 12 and 20 people (max) confirmed in order for us to consider your request.
  • Check back in May for full details and availability. 
Important Tour Details:
  • Tours are approximately 2.9 kilometers long (just under 2 miles) and take about 90 minutes. 
  • Please wear comfortable walking shoes and sunblock, and bring drinking water. 
  • Because of the distance and speed at which we walk, this tour is not recommended for children under 10 years old or for people with mobility problems. 
  • Tours may be canceled at the last minute due to inclement weather. On rainy days check with us at 780.424.4085. Or visit our twitter feed @corecrewyeg for last minute cancellations.
  • To ensure the tour is enjoyable for all, tour capacity is set at 20 people per tour.
